Please do not attempt to repair your own water heater unless you are a qualified technician.

The information below, for assorted water heater problems, assumes that the water heater has been properly installed and was operating correctly before any problems developed. These are just general guidelines, covering the most common water heating problems, thus helping to make you a more educated consumer.

Problem: No Hot Water

For Gas Hot Water Heaters:

Remove the inner and outer burner access covers and check to see if the pilot light is lit.

* Caution: Many modern water heaters no longer use standing pilots. They use electronic ignition to ignite the gas. Do not attempt to manually light an electronic ignition system.

If the pilot light is not lit:

Attempt to re-light the pilot light.

If the pilot light will not re-light, the problem could be a clogged pilot line or orifice, or gas is not reaching the water heater. Call for service.

If the pilot light will light but does not stay lit when the gas valve control is released, the problem could be a defective or loose thermocouple, or perhaps a faulty gas control valve. Make sure the thermocouple connection to the control valve is tight.

If the pilot light is lit:

Turn on a hot water tap and let the water run for several minutes. Check to see if the burner comes on.  If not, run the hot water several more minutes. If the burner still does not come on, the problem could be a defective control valve/thermostat.

Check to see if the control valve knob is  in the “on” setting and not set to the “pilot” position.

For Electric Hot Water Heaters:

If you have no hot water from an electric Hot Water Heater, first make sure the breakers are on. Otherwise, it is most likely either a bad upper element or thermostat, or it is off on a high limit safety. Some water heaters have a resetable safety switch at the upper thermostat. This usually requires removing the upper access panel.

* Caution: High Voltage connections are behind access doors. Turn off all power to the appliance at the main panel box before removing the water heater panel. Use caution when removing the panel and double-check electrical connections with a volt meter. If you are unsure how, then you shouldn’t be attempting this!

Once confirmed that the electric is off, check to see if the red reset button has popped out. If so try resetting it, you will hear a click. Then re-install the panel cover and reset the breaker. You should hear the unit start to charge. Keep in mind, that if the upper limit opens, it is usually because a thermostat stuck closed and it will do so again, requiring changing.

Problem: Insufficient Hot Water

Check the thermostat setting, it may be set too low.  Check for leaking faucets. There could be a dip tube problem. If the dip tube has broken or fallen off, incoming cold water will be drawn out through the hot water outlet without being heated. Keep in mind you really shouldn’t try checking this yourself!

Other possible causes include clogged burners and low gas pressure, which would also require a service call.

Problem: Slow Hot Water Recovery

Sediment buildup on the bottom of the water heater can do this. Flushing the water heater may help. Other possible causes may be insufficient combustion air; caused by insufficient ventilation, or improper burner operation.

Problem: Discharge From TP/Relief Valve

The relief valve will open if either the water temperature is too high, or if the pressure gets too high.  If the inlet to the water heater is fed directly from the water main, with no pressure relief valves or check valves between them, then when the water is heated and expands, the extra volume of water simply flows back toward the water main.

If however, there is a blockage such as a check valve or pressure reducing valve with a defective bypass, then the increase in water volume has nowhere to go, and the pressure will increase dramatically.

Placing an expansion tank in the line, at the inlet, will give the increased volume of water someplace to go and prevent the relief valve from opening.

Another possibility is that the City water pressure has increased above the setting of the relief valve.  Again, the installation of an expansion tank can help solve this problem, at least with a minor to moderate increase in city pressure. A significant pressure increase will still however, cause the relief valve to open.

Problem: Pilot Light Won’t Stay Lit

Sometimes a draft will blow the pilot light out. Make sure the burner access covers are in place. Other possible causes include dirt in the gas line, loose thermocouple connections,  or a defective thermocouple.

Problem: Popping or Banging Noise

Scale can build up  in the bottom of the tank; causing all sorts of noises to occur while the water heater is heating water. Try flushing the tank.

Problem: Hot Water Smells Really Bad!

Certain types of bacteria can react with the magnesium anode rod resulting in a rotten egg odor. Cleaning the tank using chlorine bleach, or changing the anode rod to aluminum usually solves the problem.

Problem: Leaking Tank

All tanks eventually leak! It’s like death and taxes! No fix for this, sorry! Replace the water heater.

HELP!! My Toilet is Overflowing!!!!

“Help!! My toilet is overflowing onto the floor and it just won’t stop! I tried shutting the water off underneath the toilet and it helped a little, but it still keeps flowing. I’m up to my ankles in sewage! What do I do?”

You have no idea how many times we at NDI Plumbing Inc. have received that phone call from frantic homeowners! If your toilet starts to back up and overflow, don’t panic. The important thing is to get the overflow under control and to identify the source of the problem. That means keeping a cool head and taking an analytical approach.

First off, whenever your toilet overflows, it is a good idea to turn off the water to the toilet because it eliminates any more water from being used until the problem is fixed. The shut off is beneath the bowl, usually on the left side.

Did the overflow begin when you flushed the toilet? When your toilet overflows right after you flush it’s usually a sign that the toilet itself has a blockage. If it turns out that the clog is in the toilet itself, you could try using a toilet plunger to move the blockage through the toilet. That may be all you need to rectify the situation. Give it a few plunges to see if clears the clog. If not, don’t continue — it will probably just make things worse. Call a plumbing and drain professional; they can unclog the toilet quickly, inexpensively and safely.

What if your toilet keeps overflowing even when you haven’t flushed it? Usually this means the clog is in a drain pipe, possibly your main drain pipe or sewer line. If this is the case, when you run water from any fixture such as a shower, the water will back up from the main drain pipe and come out of your toilet bowl because it is the lowest point in your drain system. Of course, this makes it seem like the toilet is the problem, when in fact it’s your main drain pipe or sewer line that isn’t letting water go down. If you stop using water at other fixtures, the toilet will stop overflowing.

If it appears that your main drain or sewer might be clogged, call a drain cleaning professional as soon as possible. Powerful drain clearing equipment is required to unblock a main drain.

If you have a private septic system, the problem may be that your septic tank is full and is causing your main drain to back up into your home. If your septic tank has not been pumped within the last eighteen months, you should have it done to see if this is the cause of your problem. Even if you discover the problem was not in the septic tank, taking care of past due maintenance on your septic system is money well spent.

It’s also very possible that the problem is not on your end. If you are on a town sewer system it is possible that the city sewer is blocked and sewage from your home and or your neighbors’ homes is backing up into your home. Check with your neighbors to see if they are having any problem with their main drains. If they are, be sure to call your town sewer department. If your neighbors or town say they are having problems, your town will take care of unclogging the sewer pipe. If raw sewage has backed into your home, you can call a professional cleaning company to handle the clean up and properly sanitize your home.

What are outdoor misting systems?

Outdoor misting systems provide a way for you to cool your outdoor environment. Misting systems can be installed to cool your patio, deck or pool area. Misting systems are also used in greenhouses for both humidity and temperature control. While homeowners can create their own outdoor cooling systems, hiring a professional contractor will provide the best results.

Misting systems cool the air in a way that is similar to swamp coolers without the use of a blower. Water is sent through nozzles at a high pressure creating a fine mist. As the water moves through the air, it begins the evaporation process. The heat in the air is the energy that is used and as the energy is consumed in evaporation, the surrounding air cools.

Fans can be added to the systems to increase the cooling effect. Misting systems can be operated by standard switches or remote controls. Hose bibs are found on the outside of almost every home and tend to get a lot of regular use. Hose bibs (sometimes called outdoor taps or water spigots) are basic valves, which control the flow of water. There are many types of valves, such as ball and gate valves, but the hose bib makes use of a globe valve. It operates very simply.

In the valve, a rubber or neoprene washer is attached to a handle, which when screwed down, covers the opening to the supply and the water is shut off. Because of the durability of the valve, the flow of water can also be manipulated, making hose bibs more similar to faucets than ball or gate valves.

With time, however, and because of the hose bib’s outdoor location, the metal can rust and the rubber washer inside will deteriorate. This will be cause for a replacement. Water heater Tips 3-21-2012

Water heater replacement is something that NDI Plumbing Inc. specializes in!  If you have a water heater in your home or place of business you know that it is a matter of time until you will need to replace it.  If you have a tank water heater, I wanted to give some tips on what to look for but also what to expect if you have NDI plumbers change-out your water heater.

If your water heater tank is in the basement of your home, business, or garage always check the copper lines going into the tank.  If you see corrosion or water sitting on top of the inlets, this is a sign of a leak!  Also, check the bottom of your water heater monthly (especially if it is old) for rust, corrosion, or dripping water.  This tip is especially important because the bottom of the tank could bust open and leak up 75 gallons of water, depending on the size of your tank.  Not good!  All of these problems would usually lead to your water heater needing to be replaced.

After you call or schedule NDI Plumbing Inc. to replace your water heater, we would get approval from you to do the work.  Then our plumbers would start to drain the water heater so they can remove it.  After most of the water has been drained the plumbers would remove the old water heater and bring in the new one. As an additional feature, before setting the new tank, the plumber will set an aluminum or plastic drain pan in order to keep water from leaking.  After setting the drain pan the new water heater is lifted-up and set into place.  A new water shut-off valve is set on the copper supply lines and everything for the supply lines is welded together.  Water is added to the tank and after it is full, electricity is hooked up or gas.  The plumber would then turn the unit on and set the temperature at your preferred setting.  It takes a couple of hours for water to heat-up to the set temperature.

Before You Call for Service:

 

  • Make a list of plumbing problems.
  • Try to reproduce the problem – it’s always frustrating if the problem doesn’t happen when the plumber arrives.
  • Locate any of the original paperwork to help identify the model and part numbers.
  • Group plumbing problems together and make one call.

 

When Calling for Service:

 

  • Tell them, to the best of your knowledge, exactly what’s wrong when you talk to him on the telephone.
  • If the toilet is leaking, tell him it’s the toilet. If it’s the bathroom sink, don’t merely say that “there’s a leak in the bathroom” and expect him to tell you what to do until he gets there.
  • There are thousands of brands and tens of thousands of different parts, the plumber can’t be expected to carry them all. So, provide as much information as you can (i.e., size, part, model numbers and previous history etc.).

 

Before the Plumber Arrives:

 

  • Remove or restrain large pets from area.
  • Empty cabinets and sinks where work is to be performed.
  • Clear a path to water heater or crawl space entrance.

 

After the Plumber Arrives:

 

  • Explain what you see as the problem and everything that has been done previously. This will speed the work and lower your plumbing bill.

Before the Plumber Leaves:

  • Inspect the work to ensure what you expected was done.
  • Ask questions about this or future projects.-
